One of my favourite political songs of all-time: ‘Russians’ – Sting

In Europe and America, there’s a growing feeling of hysteria

Conditioned to respond to all the threats

In the rhetorical speeches of the Soviets

Mr. Khrushchev said we will bury you

I don’t subscribe to this point of view

It’d be such an ignorant thing to do

If the Russians love their children too

How can I save my little boy from Oppenheimer’s deadly toy

There is no monopoly of common sense

On either side of the political fence

We share the same biology

Regardless of ideology

Believe me when I say to you

I hope the Russians love their children too

There is no historical precedent

To put the words in the mouth of the president

There’s no such thing as a winnable war

It’s a lie we don’t believe anymore

Mr. Reagan says we will protect you

I don’t subscribe to this point of view

Believe me when I say to you

I hope the Russians love their children too

We share the same biology

Regardless of ideology

What might save us me and you

Is if the Russians love their children too

This is an amazing song that perfectly captures the paranoia and uncertainty of the cold war years with US and Western Europe on one side and USSR and Eastern Europe on the other. Sting’s songwriting here is brilliant as in, he doesn’t overtly take sides. He says that he does not subscribe to Khrushchev’s or Reagan’s points of view and that if either side loved their own children and wanted a secure future for them, they would not attempt to bury the other side with the use of nuclear weapons. The haunting theme is from a Russian classical piece and the music really provides a scary, apocalyptic atmosphere of impending destruction and doom. There are some great lines in this song too, that leave a lasting impression on one’s mind, like “There’s no such thing as a winnable war, it’s a lie we don’t believe anymore” and “we share the same biology regardless of ideology”. We need a strong, unifying form of protest like this for the terrorism-infested world that we live in now. Too bad the terrorists don’t even love their own children!
